So, here we have it, the International Year of Astronomy is finally here! A few hours ago I celebrated the new Year with family sat in the living room recovering from a nasty virus that has inflicted all of the family members and instead of the usual tipple settled for a cup of tea instead. Back home in Manchester the neighbours had a different idea, most of the area had decided to keep some fireworks back from bonfire night and at the stroke of midnight we were treated to an explosive display to bring in IYA 2009, with a clear sky and Orion as the backdrop, how appropriate!

Hi sotira… Happy new year…
Dear Sotira,
you were lucky (well, with the sky, not with your health) – I have been waiting for clear skies at New Year’s for 11 years (the time I have been living in The Netherlands). The last 5 nights before New Year were great, but during 31 Dec fog came in – and all we could see was firworks in the fog.
Anyway, happy blogging, Detlef.
Hi,
first of all I want to say, that Cosmic Diary is a magnificent idea. Now I can see how the lifes of astronomers look in whole world.
I’ve got a question: how can I popularize astronomy in my city? Anty ideas? Now I’m only secondary school student and there’s nobody who wants to show for people how exciting astronomy is.
Greetings and happy IYA!
