WISE downloaded its one millionth 4-color frameset last night. It was taken 29-May-2010 20:23:14 UTC and centered at (l,b) = (90.33,14.53). The survey continues…
Ned Wright, 65 years old, is a professor at UCLA. He did far-infrared observations using a 102-cm balloon-borne telescope for his PhD thesis, and has since observed with the Kuiper Airborne Observatory, and the space-based COBE, WMAP, Spitzer and WISE missions.
Thanks for the update, Dr. Wright. As someone who has to deal with colossal datasets in a different domain, I would find it quite interesting to see a paper on what is latest tools, flows, and languages JPL uses to process and archive your data.
Of course, you guys & gals are probably way too busy to write up such a thing. (If I remember correctly, WISE is being done on a very low budget, and that typically means “not much spare time” for the team….) So instead, please try to enjoy the Memorial Day holiday!
