Tomorrow, a TV crew come to ESAC, my working place, to shoot an interview with me. This is as a result of “Cosmic Diary” and the awareness that the media is having about the International Year of Astronomy. Less than two weeks have passed since 2009 started, and already the initiative has permeated deep into different segments of the society, at least in the case of Spain.
It is not the first time this happen. I have already collaborated with several TV and radio programs, and last year I participate in a very interesting initiative by the regional government of Madrid called +”investigadores. It was a lot of fun to work with the director, the camera and the sound technician and I believe they made a wonderful work in the post-edition. You can watch the result in this embedded video:
However, although it makes you feel like a media star, the real reason why I participate in these initiatives (TV, radio, interviews in newspapers, blogs and “Cosmic Diary” itself) is another. In a sense I am following the steps of my colleague and friend Benjamin Montesinos, who help me a lot when I was a student (and afterwards) and has been a teacher for me in several respects. When nobody believed in outreach activities in Spain, in coming back to the society part of what we receive and learn, he was very keen on it. And believe me, at least in Spain, traditionally most scientist and evaluators would think that outreach is a waste of time. For sure, it takes a lot of time from our research or, most likely, from our leisure time. Because it is also a pleasure to try to communicate science in a direct, fun language, keeping always the accuracy, of course.
Anyway, I am looking forward tomorrow. I hope hat eventually I will be able to show the video here.
