Last night I got up at 3:45 AM and went out to the hammock in my LA backyard. In five minutes I saw one Perseid meteor, pretty bright, with a bright Moon 6 days past full and only able to see a third of the sky due to trees, hills and my house. I could really only see 3.5 magnitude stars. So I expect the August meteors were good this year.

Ned Wright, 65 years old, is a professor at UCLA. He did far-infrared observations using a 102-cm balloon-borne telescope for his PhD thesis, and has since observed with the Kuiper Airborne Observatory, and the space-based COBE, WMAP, Spitzer and WISE missions.
