{"id":8,"date":"2012-04-26T17:22:23","date_gmt":"2012-04-26T21:22:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cosmic.erdd.us\/jgirard\/?page_id=8"},"modified":"2015-02-06T16:46:50","modified_gmt":"2015-02-06T20:46:50","slug":"who-am-i","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/cosmicdiary.org\/jgirard\/who-am-i\/","title":{"rendered":"About Julien"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Julien Girard's personal home page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sc.eso.org\/~jgirard\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Julien Girard<\/b><\/a>\u00a0is a Paranal Operations Staff Astronomer who joined the European Southern Observatory (<a title=\"ESO, the European Southern Observatory\" href=\"http:\/\/www.eso.org\" target=\"_blank\">ESO<\/a>) in 2009. <strong>Adaptive Optics<\/strong> (AO) specialist, he&#8217;s the\u00a0Instrument Scientist (IS)\u00a0of <a title=\"VLT\/NACO\" href=\"http:\/\/eso.org\/sci\/facilities\/paranal\/instruments\/naco\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">VLT\/NACO<\/a>\u00a0&amp; \u00a0<a title=\"VLT\/SPHERE\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eso.org\/sci\/facilities\/develop\/instruments\/sphere.html\" target=\"_blank\">SPHERE<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_69\" style=\"width: 352px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cosmicdiary.org\/jgirard\/files\/2012\/04\/Photo_profile1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-69\" class=\"size-full wp-image-69\" src=\"http:\/\/cosmicdiary.org\/jgirard\/files\/2012\/04\/Photo_profile1.jpg\" alt=\"Julien Girard at the VLT console\" width=\"342\" height=\"334\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-69\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Julien Girard at the VLT console<\/p><\/div>\n<p>His main research interests are: <strong>star &amp; planet formation<\/strong>, faint companions search\u00a0and characterization (brown dwarfs &amp; extra-solar planets and the disks where they usually form), close and\u00a0dusty environment of young and\/or massive stars, etc.\u00a0\u00a0For that, Julien uses\u00a0<strong>high angular &amp; high contrast imaging techniques<\/strong>\u00a0extensively, mainly in\u00a0the\u00a0infrared\u00a0and from the ground. Also interested in the time-domain, he participates to campaign to measure extrasolar planet atmospheres\u00a0via transits and occultations. He obtained a master&#8217;s degree in Instrumentation Physics from the <a title=\"U of U\" href=\"http:\/\/www.utah.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">University of Utah<\/a> in 2000, a 2nd one in\u00a0Astrophysics (<a title=\"UJF Grenoble\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ujf-grenoble.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\">UJF<\/a>\/<a title=\"IPAG\" href=\"http:\/\/ipag.osug.fr\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\">IPAG<\/a>, Grenoble) the next year and his <strong>PhD in 2005<\/strong> (<a title=\"UCBL Lyon 1\" href=\"http:\/\/www.univ-lyon1.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\">UCBL<\/a>\/<a title=\"Observatoire de Lyon (CRAL)\" href=\"http:\/\/www-obs.univ-lyon1.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\">Observatoire de Lyon<\/a>) for his contribution to the polychromatic laser guide star project\u00a0ELPOA.\u00a0Before ESO, he spent 3 years in Mexico City as a postdoctoral fellow at <a title=\"IA-UNAM\" href=\"http:\/\/www.astroscu.unam.mx\/\" target=\"_blank\">IA<\/a>&#8211;<a title=\"UNAM\" href=\"http:\/\/www.unam.mx\/\" target=\"_blank\">UNAM<\/a>\u00a0and as assistant professor at <a title=\"IPN Mexico\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ipn.mx\/\" target=\"_blank\">IPN<\/a>\/<a title=\"ESFM del IPN\" href=\"http:\/\/www.esfm.ipn.mx\/\" target=\"_blank\">ESFM<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Julien enjoys participating to public outreach activities and is one of the\u00a0<a title=\"ESO Photo Embassadors\" href=\"http:\/\/www.eso.org\/public\/outreach\/partnerships\/photo-ambassadors.html\" target=\"_blank\">ESO Photo Ambassadors<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You can follow Julien on twitter (<a title=\"Julien Girard (djulik) twitter\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/djulik\" target=\"_blank\">@djulik<\/a>).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Julien Girard\u00a0is a Paranal Operations Staff Astronomer who joined the European Southern Observatory (ESO) in 2009.
