The Project:

The Cosmic Diary is not just about astronomy. It's more about what it is like to be an astronomer.

The Cosmic Diary aims to put a human face on astronomy: professional scientists will blog in text and images about their lives, families, friends, hobbies and interests, as well as their work, their latest research findings and the challenges that face them. The bloggers represent a vibrant cross-section of female and male working astronomers from around the world, coming from five different continents. Outside the observatories, labs and offices they are musicians, mothers, photographers, athletes, amateur astronomers. At work, they are managers, observers, graduate students, grant proposers, instrument builders and data analysts.

Throughout this project, all the bloggers will be asked to explain one particular aspect of their work to the public. In a true exercise of science communication, these scientists will use easy-to-understand language to translate the nuts and bolts of their scientific research into a popular science article. This will be their challenge.

Yesterday I enjoyed a wedding ceremony and party of a new couple; a young solar physicist and a secretary. The photo shows that the couple is cutting  the wedding cake. The cake was specially made with imaging the surface of the Sun. The yellow surface consists of super granules, which are slices of orange. Black balls are sunspots, actually raspberry. A lot of raspberry with hoping that the next solar activity is coming up very soon. They really love the Sun (and love each other).  It was very delicious cake. Congratulations to the new couple!

昨日ある若い太陽研究者の結婚式・結婚披露パティに出席しました。写真はウエディングケーキ入刀のシーンです。ケーキは研究テーマ「太陽」をイメージして特別に作ったものだそうです。表面は超粒状斑に覆われています。オレンジのスライスで。黒い粒のは黒点。極大期が早く来ることを祈ってたくさん。ラズベリーです。さすが太陽に惚れていますね(奥様にも)。おいしいケーキでした。幸せそうなお二人に乾杯!

Magnetic reconnection. This is the physical process to convert magnetic energy into thermal and kinematic energies in a short time scale by reconnecting anti-parallel magnetic field lines. Magnetic reconnections are believed to be the source of explosions well observed in the Sun and astrophysical plasma. Details of reconnection are, however, not well understood. For understanding the physics of magnetic reconnection, scientists in Hinode science team have started collaborative studies with a laboratory plasma group. The laboratory plasma group led by Prof. Yasushi Ono at school of engineering, the University of Tokyo, has been investigating magnetic reconnections for a long time by colliding magnetic plasma with another magnetic plasma in a vacuum chamber. On September 30 - October 1, we had a small meeting with participant of 4 Hinode scientists and 3 laboratory plasma scientists at Kiyosato near NAOJ’s Nobeyama Radio Observatory, to have discussions about comparison between magnetic reconnections in solar plasma and laboratory plasma. We are planning to perform some reconnection experiments in the laboratory with similar magnetic field configuration observed on the Sun with Hinode. Discussions at this time were very fruitful and we identified future directions of the collaborative studies. Future process will be expected.

磁気リコネクション(磁気再結合)。反対向きの磁力線がつなぎかわり、磁場のエネルギーを短時間に熱や運動エネルギーに変換する物理過程です。この過程は、太陽や天体プラズマで観測される爆発性のもとであると、多くの研究者が信じています。しかしその過程の詳細はまだよく理解されていません。磁気リコネクションの物理を理解するために、「ひので」の研究グループは実験室プラズマの研究グループとの間で共同研究を始めています。東京大学工学部の小野靖教授の研究グループは、実験室に設置したチャンバ内にて磁気プラズマを衝突させる磁気リコネクション実験に長年取り組み、リコネクション物理の理解を目指しています。9/30-10/1に、ひのでから4名、小野研究室から3名が参加して、研究検討会を清里で開催しました。「ひので」が太陽面で観測した爆発現象を実験室で模擬して物理診断する実験を具体的に進めるための討論をしました。今回の議論で、これから行う実験の方向性が見えてきました。今後の進展に期待が持てます。

A party was held on September 18 for celebrating the 80th anniversary of Kyoto University’s Kwasan Observatory.  Solar physics and its related topics have been mainly studied at the observatory. The observatory is located on the hill at the east of Kyoto town and it is just 15-20 minutes drive from Kyoto downtown.

京都大学の花山天文台が80周年を迎え、それを祝うパーティが18日に京都大学で開かれました。花山天文台では、太陽を中心とした観測・研究が行われています。天文台は、京都の街の東側にある山にあり、街から非常に近い天文台です。

Astronomical Society of Japan fall meeting at Yamaguchi University

On September 14-16, I participated in the fall meeting of the ASJ (Astronomical Society of Japan), which was held at Yamaguchi University. Yamaguchi University is located at the most west part of the “Honsyu” island (Japan’s main island) and it took about 5 hours from Tokyo by Shinkansen. On the arrival at the nearest local station, Yuda-onsen (Yuda hot spring) station,  we were welcomed by a “big white fox” statue. How big it is! More than 600 papers were presented during the meeting. I spent most time in solar related session. The solar session had a lot of presentations with observational and theoretical studies, many of them are related to Hinode’s observations. I reported on my recent interesting study. Because of 9 sessions in parallel, it is very difficult to join non-solar-related sessions, which are also interesting for me. In the business meeting, this Cosmic Dialy was introduced to researchers and students when Dr. Junichi Watanabe reported on the IAY2009 status. This triggered me to write this brief report (I did not post up since the eclipse on July 22). A party was also a fun time, because I met non-solar-related scientists and talked various topics with them.  I also enjoyed hot spring; I took open-air bath at night as well as in the morning before going to the meeting.

9月14日から16日に、日本天文学会秋季年会が山口大学にて開催され、参加してきました。山口大学は本州の西端にあり、東京から新幹線で約5時間かかります。最寄駅の湯田温泉駅を降り立つと、「巨大」な白狐の歓迎を受けます。大きくてちょっと驚きます(笑)。学会は9会場で並列に進められ、殆どの時間「太陽」セッションに参加しました。「ひので」衛星をはじめとしたデータに基づいた観測的研究や理論研究の発表があり、面白い研究結果を聞きました。本当は他の(専門分野以外)のセッションも聞きたいのですが、講演数が600以上となると複数のセッションが並列に開かれるのは致しかたありません。15日の総会では、世界天文年の状況報告にてこのCosmic Dialyの紹介がありました。7月下旬以降ブログ更新をサボっていたので、大急ぎでこれを書きました。研究者の親睦を深めるために、懇親会もありました。普段は会わない太陽以外の研究者ともお話でき、楽しいひとときでした。10分も経たない間に食べ物は殆ど奪われ、1時間もすると液体燃料(ビール)もなくなりました。そのため、その後湯田温泉街に繰り出しました。また露天風呂も楽しめました。

July 22. The total eclipse day has come. At Tanegashima island, we sometimes had light showers from early morning. Since it was forecasted that the rain front moves to southward, we may be unlucky for eclipse watching.

After 8 o’clock, I arrived at the JAXA Tanegashima Space Center. A lot of cars were already parked and many people were there for waiting for sunshine. After 9:30 JST, it was the time to begin the eclipse, but it was still rainy. We could not see the Sun, although the sky was bright near the sea horizon at the south.  Lightening watch warning was announced in the space center. I find a place to sit on the lawn below the H-II rocket real-scale model. I planed to record with video camera how the world becomes dark with time.

After 10:30 JST, we had weak sunshine for a few minutes. We watched the partially occulted Sun through clouds, from beside the rocket. Because of thick clouds, we did not need to use ND filter. Children cheered wildly when they identified the crescent Sun.

However, after that time, dark clouds came and came from the west and we could not watch the Sun. About 10 minutes before the total eclipse start, we could easily identify that it is slightly dark. The temperature seemed to start to drop and cool air blowed through us. More than dragonflied flied around the rocket.

The world around us was quickly darkening (See the video), as it was reaching the total eclipse. I felt how strong the solar light is! I also imagined that the Moon is chasing the Sun. The feeling that we are in the Universe made me tremble. The total eclipse time has come. The world was very dark with cream-colored sky at the north-east direction.  One minute total eclipse were over. The world was quickly back to normal.  I was satisfied to watch the evolution of darkness, although I could not watch the total eclipse by eye.

7月22日、皆既日食の日がやってきた。種子島は朝からスコール的な雨が降ったりやんだりしている。梅雨前線がさらに南下する予報が出ていて、ちょっと難しい雰囲気。

朝8時すぎに種子島宇宙センターに到着。すでに駐車場にはたくさんの車が止まり、たくさんの人々が晴れを待っている。9時半過ぎ、日食が始まったころだ。弱い雨が降っている。南の水平線は明るいが、太陽は全く見えない。雷注意情報が宇宙センター内に発令された。雨宿りの場所を、H-IIロケット模型の下に確保して、せめて日食で暗くなる世界を体感しよう。

10時半すぎに、薄日が数分間さした。ロケットの下から出て、7割がた欠けた太陽を拝んだ。雲が厚く、日食グラスも必要ない。子供などから歓声が上がる。

しかし、その後、灰色の雲が西から次々にやってきて、再び太陽を見ることがなかった。皆既突入の10分ほど前から、周囲がうす暗くなりはじめたのが分かる。蒸し暑さもやわらぎ、涼しい風が吹き抜ける。赤とんぼが10匹以上ロケットのまわりをとびまっている。

急速に周囲が暗くなっていく(記録ビデオ、20090722eclipse_at_tnsc)。太陽光の凄さを感じる。月が太陽を追いかけっこしているだと想像する。宇宙を感じているような気がして、身震いする。皆既の時間だ。相当に真っ暗。北東方向の空は、皆既ではないので、クリーム色で明るい。その後、約1分の皆既時間は過ぎ、再びもとの明るさに急速に戻っていった。皆既中の太陽を見ることはできなかったが、暗くなる体感ができたことで満足した。

I’m now at Tanegashima island, where a JAXA’s launch site “Tanegashima Space Center” is located. On 22 July, tomorrow, the space center is inside the total eclipse zoon. On 20 and 21 July, I’m giving a public lecture “Mistery of the solar corona” at the space center. A lot of people who come to Tanegashima for eclipse watching are also visiting the space center. The auditorium is completely occupied by the visitors every lecture. The latest weather forecast says it is cloudy tomorrow, but I’m hoping them to have a chance for watching the total eclipse.

今、種子島の宇宙センターに来ている。種子島宇宙センターも明日の皆既日食で皆既帯に入る。20,21日に宇宙センターの宇宙科学技術館で「太陽コロナのふしぎ」という特別講演をしている。日食を見に来た方が多数宇宙センターの見学にいらしていて、会場ホールは毎回満員だ。明日の天気が微妙だが、少しでも観測できればと祈っている。

Total eclipse can be watched in southern Japan and China next Wednesday (July 22).  “Hinode” satellite will meet a deep partial eclipse around 1UT on July 22, when the satellite flies from west China to India.  At this time, X-ray telescope (XRT) onboard Hinode will take series of X-ray full Sun with high cadence. The movie will show that the shadowed Moon is passing over the X-ray corona. The Hinode operation team has a plan to release this movie to the public immediately after the data is delivered to ISAS/JAXA, Sagamihara. The movie will be available from the following address (sorry, only in Japanese).

いよいよ来週水曜日(7/22)は皆既日食の日です。「ひので」衛星は、日本時間午前10時ころに中国奥地からインド上空を飛翔中に部分日食に遭遇する予定です。その際、「ひので」のX線望遠鏡は、X線で太陽全面を連続的に撮影します。太陽コロナを背景に黒い月が通過していく様子がとらえられるだろう。「ひので」運用チームは、このX線画像のムービを可能な限り短時間で地上に降ろして、一般の方々が見れるように準備しています。詳しい情報は下記を見てください。

On 5 July, last Sunday’s afternoon, I had an opportunity to give a lecture to about 30 teachers who are teaching science to students at their junior high school or high school.  A study course called “Let’s give classes with looking up the Sun” was held as the 1st of course series “Learning science with looking up the space”   (sponsored by Vixen, Inc., planned by Liveanest, Inc.). According to the planner, the number of the teachers who wanted to attend became over the capacity within only three weeks after starting its advitisement. I was very happy to hear that so many teachers were interested in it.

7月5日日曜日午後、中学・高校の理科の先生方約30名が参加した教員研修会に、太陽についての話をするために招かれた。「宇宙を見上げて科学を学ぼう」(ビクセン主催、リバネス企画)という企画の第1回目「太陽を見上げて授業をしよう」です。募集開始からわずか3週間ほどで予定人数を超え、キャンセル待ちになったとのこと。関心をもってもらいありがたいです。

My lecture consisted of three topics; The recent Sun is slightly strange? Latest views of the Sun with Hinode’s observations, and solar eclipse on July 22. The Hinode’s talk focused on the coronal heating problem, i.e., why the hot corona exists above the cool surface? I was very happy to introduce a part of latest solar researches to school teachers. I also enjoyed conversations with teachers. One question from a high school teacher; The sunspot is dark so lower temperature, but why so active compared to other area? He said that this question was given by a student a long time ago, but this question is a reasonable question from students.

さて、私の話は、「最近の太陽がちょっと変?」「ひのでがとらえた最新の太陽像」そして「7月22日の皆既・部分日食」についてです。「ひので」の話は、なぜ高温コロナが太陽表面にあるのかという「コロナ加熱」についての話。一生懸命にメモを取って真剣に私の話を聞いていただき、また話の後にいろいろな質問を頂き、いろいろと話ができ、「最新の太陽研究」について教育現場の先生方に少しでも紹介できてよかったと思います。ある先生から頂いた質問。「黒点は暗くて温度が低いのに、なぜ活動的な場所なのか」。以前生徒に質問されて答えに窮したそうですが、もっともな疑問ですよね。

We originally planned to demonstrate how to watch the Sun using a telescope before starting my talk, if the sky is clear. But due to cloudy sky, we started from my lecture. After the end of my lecture, we gradually had sunshines (though through cloud). On the roof of the building, teachers enjoyed watching the solar disk imaged on the plate behind the telescope, and they directly watched the Sun by using “eclipse glasses” (ND filter glasses). Fortunately, a sunspot group, which appeared in the previous day, can be identified in the displayed solar disk. A teacher shouted for joy, when she identified a sunspot group. I expect teachers can tell such emotion to their students in their class.

当初、空が晴れていれば、私の話の前にまずは実際の太陽を望遠鏡を使ってどのように観察するかという実践が予定されていました。しかし梅雨空で薄く雲のすきまから弱い太陽光がときどき見える程度でしたので、私の話からはじめました。しかし、私の話が終わった後から、徐々に太陽を見ることができる状態がときどきあり、皆さんで太陽像を投影版に投影して観察したり、また「日食めがね」で太陽を直接見てみたりしました。前日に比較的大きめな黒点群が現われたので、のっぺらな太陽でなく、しみのある太陽を見ることができました。太陽黒点を見て、歓声を上げた女性の先生がいたり。この感動を生徒さんにも是非伝えてもらえればと思いました。

After the sun watching, the second lecture was given by Fujimoto-san of Vixen, who told telescope optics and how to use telescopes. Using “eco-scope” (which was sold ten years ago but could not be sold out), which consists of two small lens, teachers learn how the primary len focus the image and then how the eyepiece (second lens) works. This “eco-scope” is called because it becomes a small telescope by inserting the toilet paper’s cylinder core between the two lenses. This toy is a good educational tool to learn how optical lens works.

最後に、ビクセンの藤本さんが、天体望遠鏡の仕組みや使い方についての講義をされました。10年前に販売した(けど売れなかったらしい)「エコスコープ」という小さなレンズ2つを使って、主レンズと接眼レンズでどのように遠くの像が見えるのかを実際に体験しながら学んだ。レンズの間にトイレットペーパーの芯を入れると、小さな望遠鏡になるのだそうだ。光学レンズの仕組みを理解するには良い教材だと感じた。

Finally, this type of class is the first opportunity for me, but I fully enjoyed this time. Thanks.

A trip in Germany

I’m now at  northern Germany this week (I’m leaving today for back to Tokyo).  A couple of weeks has passed from summer solstice, but the day period here is extremely long, because of high latitude (about 52 deg). The sunset is after 21 o’clock local time at night. Even after 23 o’clock, the sky is not dark. I can identidy only one bright star in the sky, which is probably the Saturn. The sunrise is around 5 o’clock. I’m wondering that children in Germany and northern European countries has less chances to watch  stars in the summer season.

今週は会議のためにドイツ北部に来ている。夏至が過ぎたが、高緯度(北緯50度以上)にあるドイツでは、昼間の時間は恐ろしく長い。夜9時過ぎまで太陽が照っている。11時を過ぎてもまだ空は明るく、明るい星が空に1つ見つけることができるぐらいだ。恐らく土星かなと。そして、朝も早い。5時前には明るくなる。夏場は夏の星座を子供たちが見るなんてことはドイツや西欧では難しいだろうなと思った。

New solar cycle sunspot group (2009/6/1 Hinode SOT)

New solar activity cycle has really come! An “active region” appeared at the high latitude in the northern hemisphere.  This region has several sunspots which are visible for several days. “Hinode” spacecraft is observing this active region this week.  It is the first time to have continuous observation of sunspots with Hinode Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) after entering the new solar cycle.  It is almost two years after the last observation in December 2007. This is the opportunity that many solar observers have waited, although the magnetic configuration of the region is rather simple without major flares.

新しい太陽活動サイクルが始まった。数日以上にわたって太陽黒点が存在しつづける活動領域が高緯度に現われた。「ひので」が何日にもわたって黒点を観測できるのは、2007年冬以来約2年ぶりだろう。太陽フレアを引き起こすような複雑な活動領域ではないけれど、太陽研究者の多くが待ちに待っていた活動領域だ。
