Stereoscopic photo

The first Japanese satellite “Ohsumi” celebrated its 40th anniversary on February 11, which corresponds to National Foundation Day — one of the national holidays in Japan. On that day, I was in Sagamihara to host the JAXA booth entitled “Let’s experience stereoscopic view” at Children’s Science Festival in Sagamihara. Despite the bad weather, there were 1466 participants in the event, far beyond the expectation of the event organizer. I managed to take stereoscopic photos of the participants very quickly, and met almost thousand of people. There were, however, many people who got stacked in very long waiting rows to join some other booths.

日本初の人工衛星「おおすみ」の打ち上げ40周年となった2月11日は建国記念日で祝日でした。この日には神奈川県子どもサイエンスフェスティバルの県北地区大会が地元の相模原市青少年学習センターで開かれましたので、今年の定番の「立体視を体験しよう」というコーナーを出展してきました。天気はいま一つでしたが、主催者の予想をはるかに上回る1466名もの参加者がありました。こちらは手数が掛かるのが裸眼立体視のできる記念写真の撮影なので手際よく大勢の参加者をさばくことができましたが、工作教室などではあちこちに長蛇の列ができて、どれがどの待ち行列か分からなくなるような状況だったそうです。

Fortieth anniversary of "Ohsumi"

February 11 is the anniversary of the first Japanese satellite “Ohsumi”, which was launched in 1970 onboard L-4S-5 rocket by University of Tokyo. To celebrate its fortieth anniversary, we held a symposium celebrating the fortieth anniversary of “Ohsumi” entitled “History of Japanese space science — Pencil, Lambda, Mu, and the future” and associated special exhibit. The symposium venue was set to be National Science Museum, where the actual Lambda rocket launcher used to launch the first Japanese satellite exists. Pre-registration of the symposium reached the maximum capacity of the auditorium just 24 hours after the announcement, reflecting very high demand for this kind of symposium. The symposium on February 7 started with documentary films on Japanese early space development, followed by keynote talks by Ryojiro Akiba, Yasunori Matogawa, and Yasuhiro Morita and discussion with the participants. I participated in this symposium as an organizer and the facilitator, and was impressed to hear proposal on Japanese “X-Prize” and discussions on the roles of universities and industries in space development in the near future.

日本初の人工衛星「おおすみ」が東京大学によってL-4Sロケット5号機によって打ち上げられたのは1970年の2月11日のことでした。これを祝うために、「おおすみ」40周年記念シンポジウム「日本の宇宙科学の歴史・ペンシルからラムダ、ミュー、そして未来へ」を開催しました。シンポジウムの会場は「おおすみ」を打ち上げたラムダランチャーの実機が展示されている上野の国立科学博物館で、その地球館の2階では2月28日まで企画展を併せて行っています。2月7日に行ったシンポジウムは、募集開始の翌日には定員に達し、熱心なファンがいることがよく分かりました。当日は40年前の記録映画の上映に始まり、秋葉鐐二郎名誉教授の「50年後の『おおすみ』は？」、的川泰宣名誉教授の「ミューが拓いた世界」、そして森田泰弘教授の「日本のロケットの将来像」の3つの基調講演を軸に、宇宙科学の将来について、特に輸送系に焦点をあてて考える機会としました。私はこのシンポジウムの組織委員および当日の進行役としての参加でしたが、「おおすみ」50周年記念事業(いわば日本版のX-Prize)の提案や、近未来の宇宙開発における大学や民間の役割についての議論など、個人的にはいろいろと考えさせられる機会となりました。

Healing Venus

There is a popular FM radio program entitled “Ayaka Hirahara’s Healing Venus” that is on air in Sunday afternoons, and the personality and famous singer, Ayaka Hirahara, invited me again as a guest. This time, the main topics were Venus and the Venus Climate Orbiter “Akatsuki” (PLANET-C) to be launched in this year. She kindly gave us a message to Venus to be onboard “Akatsuki”. In addition to the talk with her, the staffs asked me to tell some of my “healing words”. My answer was a part of lyric of a famous Japanese pops –
    You don’t need to be a number one
    ‘Cause you’ve always been the only one
Ayaka and her staffs seemed to be surprised to hear such words from me, because they all know that we scientists love to be the number one, and that I was also a crew of the Japanese intercollegiate champion of men’s eight when I was an undergraduate. This is not the first time for me to mention this lyric. My interpretation of this lyric is that we should accept diversity of values, and that one should further enhance one’s advantages. I want both children and their parents and teachers understand the meaning of this lyric. It will then become healing words to those who are doing their bests but temporarily with broken hearts.

毎週日曜日の夕方に放送されているTokyo FMの人気番組『平原綾香のヒーリング・ヴィーナス』に再びゲストとしてお招きいただきました。今回の対談のテーマは金星と今年打ち上げ予定の金星探査機「あかつき」。探査機に載せる金星へのメッセージをお願いした関係で呼ばれたのでした。ぶっつけの対談以外に、当日のスタッフとの打ち合わせの際に、あなたのヒーリングワードは何ですかと訊かれて私が返したのが、「世界に一つだけの花」の歌詞の一節：
　　NO.1にならなくてもいい
　　もともと特別なOnly one
科学者というのが一番を目指すのが大好きな人種であり、しかも私がボート競技でも大学日本一だったことを知る彼らにとっては、私からそのような言葉が返ってきたのは意外だったようです。しかし実は私はこの歌詞を、学校などに招かれて話をする際に、これまでにもときどき引用してきました。そのココロは、画一的な尺度や価値観で過度な序列化を進めるのではなく、多様性を認め、個性や長所を最大限伸ばしましょうということ。子供たちだけでなく、彼らの周りにいる保護者や教師にも伝えたいメッセージです。ではそれがなぜヒーリングワードなのかというと、個性を伸ばそうと頑張っていても、ときどき心が折れそうになることがあり、そのときにこのフレーズが家族のように温かく包み込んでくれるからです。

Children’s Science Festival in Fujisawa

Children’s Science Festival in Fujisawa was held on January 31, and we JAXA held a booth entitled “Let’s experience stereoscopic view”. Children were attracted by anaglyph images of the lunar craters taken with the Terrain Camera of the lunar orbiter “Kaguya”. We also took memorial 3D photographs of the visitors with the stereoscopic camera. Given that I took 144 photographs and each typically has three persons, most of the 786 participants should have experienced our booth.

神奈川県子どもサイエンスフェスティバルの湘南地区大会が1月31日に藤沢市教育文化センターで開かれ、JAXAではここでも「立体視を体験しよう」というコーナーを出展しました。月周回衛星「かぐや」の地形カメラがとらえたクレーターの立体画像などを赤青メガネを使って立体視するコーナーはここでも子供たちに大人気。素直な反応を見るのは楽しいことです。ステレオカメラを使った裸眼立体視記念写真の撮影も行いましたが、144枚の写真を撮りました。1枚当たり平均的に3名程度が写っていますので、786名の参加者のほとんどの方に体験いただけたようです。

Space School in Tokushima

The last “Space School” in this fiscal year was held on January 23 at Asutamu Land in Tokushima. Themes this time were rockets, International Space Station, and lunar exploration. I had two roles this time, one as a schoolmaster, and another as a lecturer on experiments in the International Space Station. Total number of participants was 74, not very large, but all of the participants including kids and their parents seem enjoyed the program.

Tokushima is a special place for me as my grandparents’ birthplace. Because my grandparents moved to Hyogo, Hokkaido, and then Tokyo, I had no chance to visit the birthplace of my grandfather who influenced me very much. This time I brought the address with me and asked many people to get the destination. I found my relatives still living there. Time passes, but not everything changes.

今年度最後となる「宇宙学校・とくしま」を1月23日、徳島県立あすたむらんどで行いました。今回のお題はロケットと国際宇宙ステーションと月探査。私は校長役と国際宇宙ステーション関連の講師の二役を演じました。参加者は74名と決して多くはありませんでしたが、子供たちにもその保護者の皆さんにも楽しんでいただけたようです。

ところで以前にも書きましたが、私の母方の祖父母は徳島の出です。とはいえ祖父母が徳島から兵庫県の西宮、北海道の芦別、そして東京と転々とした関係で、私に大きな影響を残した祖父の生誕の地を訪ねる機会はこれまでありませんでした。今回は戸籍の写しを手に宇宙学校の前夜に徳島市内の眉山の麓を徘徊。ホテルのフロントやタクシー運転手、最後は酒屋の店主に教えてもらい、ようやくその場所にたどり着きました。その場所には母の旧姓の表札がかかっており、本家が残っていたのでした。時が流れていろいろなものが変わるなか、そこに私のルーツのひとつが変わらずに残っていたことに感動した徳島での1日でした。

Space School in Ofunato

My first public event in this year was “Space School in Ofunato”, co-sponsored by JAXA and Ofunato City, held in the morning of January 9 at recently-build Rias Hall. We have a long history with Ofunato City in Iwate Prefecture, in that we operated Sanriku Balloon Center for scientific ballooning from fiscal year 1971 to 2007. To maintain good relation with this city, we JAXA and Ofunato City signed a collaborative agreement in 2008 March. “Space School in Ofunato” was assigned as a kick-off public event under this framework.

We set the themes to be rockets, scientific balloons, and the Solar System, and sent three leading scientists in the corresponding fields, and I could concentrate myself as a schoolmaster. I noticed that many adults know scientific balloons while most of children do not. I hope that, through subsequent events, they recall cutting-edge experiments with scientific balloons that they had been supporting.

さて、私にとって今年最初の一般向けイベントは「宇宙学校・おおふなと」。大船渡市との共催で、最近できたばかりの大船渡市民文化会館(リアスホール)で1月9日の午前中に行われました。岩手県大船渡市とJAXAの関わりは古く、1971年度から2007年度まで大気球実験を行っていた三陸大気球観測所が設置されていました。装置の大型化や周辺環境の変化、気流の変化などのために三陸大気球観測所を閉所し北海道大樹町に拠点を移した後も、大船渡の宇宙科学を通じたまちづくりを継続すべく、JAXAと大船渡市との間で2008年3月末に連携協定を結んだところです。「宇宙学校・おおふなと」はこの連携の最初のものとして位置付けられています。

今回は先方の意向も踏まえてテーマをロケットと大気球、そして太陽系としました。幸いにして3人の専門家を講師として派遣することができましたので、講演の方は講師に任せ、私は校長役に専念できました。それにしても、年配の方々は三陸での気球実験のことをよくご存じのようでしたが、子どもたちにはあまり知られていないようす。日本の宇宙科学の礎となった各種の先進的な気球実験を地元として支えてきたことを是非語り継いでほしいものです。http://www.isas.ac.jp/j/about/center/sbc/index.shtml

Beyond "Cosmic Diary 2009"

The International Year of Astronomy 2009 will be continued this year under the slogan of “Beyond International Year of Astronomy”, and the organizer decided to continue hosting this “Cosmic Diary”, I will continue blogging as one of the bloggers. In January last year, I set my goal to keep blogging more than once per two days, and achieved the goal as an average rate. I think that goal was reasonable (not too difficult, I mean) goal, and I will manage to do so this year. I already have one month’s behind, and have many activities to introduce. Stay tuned.

世界天文年2009は今年も”Beyond International Year of Astronomy”のスローガンのもとに継続されることとなり、この「天文学者のブログ」も継続されることが決まったとのことです。私ももう少し頑張ってみようと思います。昨年の1月に私は2日に一度の割合で更新しようと決意し、年末までそのペースを辛うじて保つことができました。この目標は(非現実的でないという意味で)ほどほどのものだと思いましたので、今年もこれを目標に頑張ってみようと思います。とはいえすでに1か月のブランクがあり、大いに負け越してのスタートです。とはいえ1月にもさまざまなことが起きましたので、これから何日かかけて振り返ってみます。今年もよろしくお願いします。

Party at Science Café in Nagoya

A new Italian restaurant “Galilaus Galilaei” opened in this year at Nagoya Lucent Tower, just a few minutes walk from Nagoya Station. This restaurant serves excellent Italian cuisine and scientific atmosphere, and became the first full-time science cafe, at least in this country. On every Sunday afternoons, they invite scientists and host a science café. I was invited on December 20 as the last lecturer of this year, and talked on “The Universe as viewed from space”. According to the organizer, there were a lot of people who could not join us because of the limited capacity of the room (50 may be the maximum for science café). I felt very sorry to those who could not take part in. Soon after, a party cerebrating the success of this year’s events, and the participants and some of the distinguished lecturers in this year, like Dr. Iijima, the discoverer of carbon nanotube, and Dr. Kaifu, the chairman of IYA2009 Japan Committee, gathered to enjoy chatting.

名古屋駅直結の名古屋ルーセントタワーに今年オープンしたサイエンスカフェ「ガリレオ・ガリレイ」。店内には常に科学・技術関連の映像が流れ、毎週日曜の午後には科学者によるサイエンスカフェが開催される、「常設型のサイエンスカフェ」を謳ったイタリアンレストランです。12月20日、ここに今年最後の講師として招かれ、「宙から探る宇宙」と題してお話ししてきました。50名ほどの定員は早々に予約で一杯になり、キャンセル待ちとなったとのことで、当日来られたお客さんを丁重にお断りしなければならなかったそうです。大変ありがたく、そして参加できなかった方には申し訳ないことをしました。終了後には今年を締めくくるパーティーが開かれ、当日の参加者だけでなく、カーボンナノチューブの発見で知られる飯島さんや世界天文年2009日本委員会委員長の海部さんなど、今年の講師を務めた錚々たる研究者が多数集まり、楽しいひと時となりました。

The countdown ceremony

Sagamihara City, where our campus is based on, exceeded 500 thousands of population, and will become a city designated by government ordinance (the 19th in this country and the 3rd in Kanagawa Prefecture) in coming April, and the city is busy preparing for this milestone. As a kick-off, the city held a ceremony of the 100-day countdown on December 22. The last part of the ceremony was dedicated to presentation of more than ten thousands of messages from the citizens in Sagamihara City, which will be sent to Venus onboard the Venus Climate Orbiter “Akatsuki”. Its Project Manager, Masato Nakamura, received a bundled messages from Sagamihara City Mayor and pupils. By the way, the address of our office will be changed from “3-1-1 Yoshinodai, Sagamihara” to “3-1-1 Yoshinodai, Chuo, Sagamihara” from April next year accordingly.

JAXA相模原キャンパスのある相模原市は合併などで人口50万人を優に上回っていますが、来年4月に政令指定都市(全国で19番目、神奈川県内では3番目)に移行することになり、その準備が進められています。12月22日には相模原市役所前で、政令指定都市移行100日前イベントが執り行われました。式典の最後には相模原市長や市内の小学生から金星探査機「あかつき」に搭載するメッセージの授与があり、JAXAを代表して中村正人プロジェクトマネージャーが1万名分を超える数の寄せ書きの束を受け取りました。ちなみに政令指定都市になるに伴って、来年4月からJAXA相模原キャンパスの地番表示は「相模原市由野台3-1-1」から「相模原市中央区由野台3-1-1」に変更になります。

Bundled messages to be delivered to Venus

We JAXA will launch Venus Climate Orbiter “Akatsuki” (PLANET-C) in fiscal year 2010, and are now collecting names and messages to be delivered to Venus from all over the world. As the person in charge of this campaign, I receive a lot of handwritten heart-warming messages from schools, science museums, and offices every day. Individuals can send their names and messages via internet through the website opened in collaboration with the IYA2009 Japan Committee, or they can visit science museums that encourage visitors to leave handwritten names and messages. JAXA i is one of such museums. So that we can accept names and messages during this Christmas and New Year’s holidays, we decided to extend the deadline. The new deadline is now 2010 January 10.
