How I Plan to Help Save Science Education with the Unistellar eVscope!
Published 10/2/2020 in Dan's Cosmic Diary Author Dan Peluso
Lightning strikes a dream Several weeks ago I had a dream during the intense lightning storms in and around San Francisco and the greater Bay Area, which then sparked some of the devastating wildfires that we are still recovering from and experiencing. In this dream, I was in my high school chemistry class. My group was asked to answer the problem on the board and when we went up and didn’t know the answer, everyone, including the teacher (and Nelson from the Simpsons), laughed at us. This inspired me to share the failure of the American education system with my students and... read more ❯

Dear Unistellar eVscope users, Want to be involved in something innovative like participating in the very first Unistellar exoplanet detection campaign? Then charge your eVscope and get ready because we need your help this weekend! My name is Dan Peluso and I am doing my PhD in astrophysics with Franck Marchis (astronomer at the SETI Institute) and as a portion of my research I want to see if it is possible for any astronomy enthusiast around the world to coordinate with planet hunting scientists like us to help contribute to the search for planets around other stars (a.k.a. exoplanets). Exoplanet searches usually... read more ❯

Drake Equation Mural in a High School Physics Class
Published 10/2/2019 in Dan's Cosmic Diary Author Dan Peluso
The Attention-Grabbing Intro How well do you remember your first high school physics class? The only thing I recall was dropping an egg off of some bleachers and trying to make a device that protected that egg so that it would not crack. I also remember that there was some math involved and I think I might not have been too happy about that. Other than those memories, I cannot remember anything from that class! Sorry, Mr. Hanlon! Science was not my favorite subject in high school. In fact, it wasn’t until my late 20s that I fell in love with science... read more ❯

Published 9/4/2017 in Franck Marchis Blog Author Franck Marchis
Thanks to Dr. Takayuki Kotani for the translation in Japanese. Let's be careful about this "SETI" signal
Published 8/29/2016 in Franck Marchis Blog Author Franck Marchis
August 31: See update at the end of this post Several readers have contacted me recently about reports that a group of international astronomers have detected a strong signal coming from a distant star that could be a sign of a high-technology civilization. Here’s my reaction: it’s interesting, but it’s definitely not the sign of an alien civilization—at least not yet. Here’s why: The signal was first detected in May 2015 and has not repeated since. Unfortunately, although international protocols call for alerting the astronomical community to the detection of a mysterious signal, the... read more ❯

ICE Spacecraft Signal Detection from the Allen Telescope Array
Published 3/20/2014 in Jon Richards Blog Author jrichards
Jon Richards, The SETI Institute The ICE spacecraft (see below) has recently approached Earth close enough to be detectable at the Allen Telescope Array (ATA). We have successfully detected the ICE spacecraft carrier signal using the SonATA (SETI on the ATA) signal detection equipment and will share the details here. The technical community has been all abuzz about the return of the ICE spacecraft, formerly named the International Earth-Sun Explorer-3 (ISEE-3). It was launched in 1978 to study Earth's magnetosphere and its interaction with the solar wind. The ICE spacecraft has been far away and out of contact for a long time... read more ❯

We all have a vested interest in this one – let’s get Uwingu launched!
Published 9/5/2012 in Jill Tarter Author Jill Tarter
Independent of the November presidential election results, future funding for scientific research (especially curiosity-driven, space-related exploration, research and education) will be declining into the foreseeable future.  The drop will be steeper if sequestration is triggered in the federal budget process.  As we wring our hands and lament one another, the phrase “alternative funding approaches” repeatedly crops up in the conversation. But who or what are these?  And how do we access them?  Is there any there, there?   Uwingu LLC is doing more than wringing their collective hands – they are trying to become a source of alternative funding for us!  This... read more ❯

S-E-T-T: Search for Extra-Terrestrial TOYS
Published 5/4/2012 in Noah Hammond Blog Author nhammond
At the California Academy of Sciences, kids took turns searching for aliens (toys) in our simulated universe of colored foam. If they didn't find anything on the first try we asked them: "Do you think that means there are no aliens in the there?" "No!" -Said the kids. "Why is that?" "Because we didn't search the whole pool. We have to keep looking!" Then we talked about how at SETI we haven't found any signs of intelligent life outside of Earth yet, but we've only searched a very small part of the Universe, so we also think we should keep looking! This game developed when I... read more ❯
